It was a dream of mine for a long time to swim with whale sharks. So we set a plan and flew over to Exmouth in Western Australia to make it happen.
The boats find the whale sharks with spotter planes, they then radio the boat and direct you to where the sharks are. We jumped in with about four sharks that day. You literally just jump off the boat in the middle of the ocean and then try and swim as fast as you can to keep up with them.
Whale sharks look like they are swimming very slow and gracefully, but I was swimming flat out to try and keep up.
Not only did I get to see whale sharks in the wild but we saw manta rays, reef sharks, an octopus, a hammerhead shark and lots of whales breaching on the boat ride back in.
A lifelong dream realised and an unforgettable experience. If you ever have a chance to swim with whale sharks jump at it. They are the most amazing animals, they grow up to 19m while only eating tiny little plankton. Their white markings on their bodies are unique to each individual shark, much like human fingerprints. Nature is amazing.
